The Plains of Foggia were home to both Axis and Allied airfields throughout the war. At the height of Allied operations, there were eighteen airfields in use. From the Foggia area it was a quick flight east to targets inYugoslavia.

The 5th Bomb Wing, which was comprised of the six B-17 Groups, used five airfields; Lucera, Celone, Amendola, Tortorella and Sterparone. Wing HQ was in the city of Foggia. The map below shows the relative positions of the 5th Wing airfields to each other and to Foggia itself.
